Guten Tag, Bonjour, Howdy Do?
As mentioned in a previous post, Petting Zoo Prints & Collectables collaborated with Palefroi on a screenprint project early on this month. For those of you not in the know, Palefroi are a dynamic duo from France who have a bureau (that’s an office to you, ninny) and studio space in the exciting city of Berlin… It was an absolute pleasure to visit and the guys were extremely generous hosts – a special shout out goes to Chip and his wonderful breakfast skills and shoddy Russian card game stunts.
A lot of Palefroi’s work (handcrafted books, prints, etc) is non-figurative or extremely abstract, so it was a thrill to clash Petting Zoo’s (up-to-now) very figurative style against theirs… due to time constraints and the Zookeeper’s hangovers the project was kept swift, fun and bitesize – a postcard set, inspired by a long discussion the night before about flying dreams, their possible meanings, the various flying positions and techniques of night-time flyers, not to mention the “look at your hands” and “switch the lights on and off” techniques used to determine whether one is lucid dreaming.
The actual process for making these was a lot of fun with absolutely no computers used (except for the address lines on the back)…
Techniques used included ink brushing, cut-out, collage, tearing and crayoning (over the lines of course).
Pictures of the prints at various stages of production (including one of the collaged positives) can be found at Palefroi’s tumblr site
The edition was split and wrapped with a neat ribbon, signed and numbered and the zoo’s half smuggled back to UK shores… look out for these at our upcoming Open House this winter!
